Purchasing a Safe or Vault

How do I choose the right safe?

First consider what you want to store and protect. Measure the items and allow extra space for future additions to determine what size of safe or vault you will need. Keep in mind the physical dimensions of the desired location you would like to keep your safe.

Next, consider what type of items you are storing. For firearms, a gun safe with extra security features and specific slots for guns would be ideal. If you are keeping documents, pay attention to the fire and water resistance ratings.

We can talk you through the process of choosing the right safe for you needs.

Many safes are fireproof or fire-resistant, meaning they can withstand high temperatures for a certain period. Check the safe’s fire rating to ensure it meets your needs for protecting important documents and valuables. It will tell you the temperature the safe can withstand and for what length of time.

Yes, many safes are designed to be waterproof, offering protection against water damage from flooding or other sources. Look for safes that specify their water resistance rating. Some have special seals that protect against water entering.

If water protection is a priority for you, we can recommend safes that will perform the best in wet conditions.

Warranties vary by manufacturer and model. Check the warranty details to understand what is covered and for how long, including any guarantees on the safe’s performance and security features.

Many of the brands we carry offer limited lifetime warranties on their safes and vaults.

Installation & Maintenance

Where is the best place to put a safe in your house?

Choosing a location for your safe isn’t a one-size-fits-all process. Consider the contents of your safe, how frequently you want to access them, the type of safe, and how heavy it is.

If you are storing frequently used items, convenience is key. For example, frequently used jewelry might be stored in a bedroom or closet and a gun safe might be placed in a garage. If you are securing documents, it’s best to place the safe on a cement floor or against cement walls for extra safety against fire.

Depending on the type of safe, you should also consider the surroundings and what you can anchor it to. Weight should also be a factor in choosing your location. Large safes over 1,000 lbs should be placed on the ground floor.

If you’re still not sure, give us a call and we can talk you through the best options for your situation.

Safes should be installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Some safes require bolting to the floor or wall for added security. Professional installation may be recommended, especially for larger or heavier safes.
